How to Use a Spiralizer Correctly: Zoodles, Vegetable Spirals and More

With a spiralizer, you can turn firm vegetables into long spirals, fine julienne strips or wide vegetable ribbons. This makes it easy to prepare zucchini noodles, carrot spaghetti, cucumber spirals, spiral potatoes and decorative side dishes right in your kitchen.

Three factors are particularly important for consistent results: the vegetables should be firm and as straight as possible, their diameter must fit the spiralizer, and the chosen cutting width should suit the dish. Find out which GEFU model best meets your needs in the model comparison above.

Which Vegetables Are Suitable for a Spiralizer?

Firm vegetables that can be held securely, clamped in place or rotated evenly through the blades work particularly well. Wash the vegetables before processing, trim the ends straight and peel them if necessary.

Zucchini and Cucumbers

Zucchini is the classic choice for zoodles and can be served raw, lightly sautéed or used in stir-fries. Cucumber spirals are particularly suitable for salads, bowls and cold side dishes.

Use zucchini and cucumbers that are as firm as possible. Very soft or overripe vegetables may break more easily during spiralizing.

Carrots, Radishes and Kohlrabi

Carrots and radishes are ideal for fine julienne strips, raw vegetable salads, soup garnishes and decorative toppings. The straighter the vegetable pieces, the more evenly they can be spiralized.

Round vegetables such as kohlrabi should be trimmed beforehand so they fit securely into the selected spiralizer.

Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes and Beetroot

Potatoes, sweet potatoes and beetroot have a firm texture and are suitable for vegetable dishes, oven-baked recipes and thicker spirals.

Because these vegetables often have a larger diameter, check in advance the maximum vegetable size each model can process.

Firm Fruit

Firm fruits such as apples or pears can also be spiralized. They make decorative salad ingredients, desserts or snacks. Remove the core first and choose fruit that is as firm as possible.

Tip: Very soft, overripe, hollow or highly irregular vegetables may break more easily during spiralizing.

Handheld or Tabletop Spiralizer: Which Design Is Right for You?

Compact Handheld Model

A handheld model is particularly suitable for smaller quantities, narrow vegetables and space-saving storage. The vegetables are rotated directly through the blades.

Tabletop Model with Crank

A tabletop model provides a stable base and is ideal for wider vegetables, larger portions and different cutting widths. The vegetable is secured in place and guided through the blade using a crank.

These Questions Will Help You Choose

  • What diameter are the vegetables you use most often?
  • Do you want to prepare individual portions or larger quantities?
  • Do you need two basic cutting sizes or several cutting widths?
  • Do you prefer a compact handheld model or a model for the countertop?

You can find the specific differences between SPIRELLI®, SPIRELLI® 2.0, SPIRELLI® XL and SPIRALFIX® in the GEFU model comparison above.

Three Steps to Even Vegetable Spirals

  1. Prepare the Vegetables

Wash the vegetables and trim both ends as straight as possible. Peel them if necessary and shorten especially long pieces so they are easy to handle safely.

  2. Choose the Right Cutting Size

Choose the cutting size to suit the dish. Fine strips are ideal for zoodles, salads and soup garnishes. Wider spirals work well in stir-fries, side dishes and oven-baked recipes.

  3. Spiralize Evenly

Guide the vegetable through the spiralizer using steady pressure. Excessive or inconsistent pressure can cause the spirals to tear or become uneven.

Which Cutting Width Is Best for Which Dish?

Fine Julienne Strips

Fine strips are ideal for zucchini noodles, carrot spaghetti, raw vegetable salads, soup garnishes and decorative toppings.

Medium Vegetable Spirals

Medium spirals are a good choice for bowls, stir-fries and side dishes where the vegetables should retain a little more texture.

Wide Vegetable Ribbons

Wide cuts are suitable for potatoes, sweet potatoes, kohlrabi and other firm vegetables. They can be baked, fried or served as a substantial vegetable side dish.

The available cutting sizes vary by model. You can find the exact dimensions in the model comparison and on the relevant product page.

What Should You Look for When Buying a Spiralizer?

Vegetable Diameter

The most important difference between the models is the maximum vegetable size. First consider which vegetables you plan to process most often.

Cutting Options

Two cutting sizes are often sufficient for classic zoodles and julienne strips. For wide spirals and a broader range of vegetable shapes, choose a model with several cutting widths.

Secure Grip

A vegetable holder or end holder protects your fingers and makes smaller pieces easier to process. For a tabletop model, a stable, non-slip base helps ensure safe use.

Easy Cleaning

Easy cleaning is important because small vegetable remnants can become lodged in the blades. A cleaning brush helps clean hard-to-reach areas.

Accessories and Spare Parts

Check whether suitable vegetable holders, cleaning brushes and other spare parts are available for your chosen model. This helps keep the spiralizer in use for years.

How to Prepare Zoodles

Zucchini contains a lot of water and therefore requires only a short cooking time. Sauté the zoodles for a few minutes over medium to high heat, or add them to a warm sauce just before serving.

Do not salt zoodles too early, as salt draws water out of the vegetables. For especially dry zucchini noodles, gently pat them with kitchen paper after spiralizing.

For more bite, heat the zoodles only briefly. Longer cooking makes them softer and releases more liquid.

How to Clean and Care for Your Spiralizer

Clean the spiralizer as soon as possible after use, before vegetable residue dries. First rinse off loose remnants under running water and use a suitable cleaning brush for the blade unit.

Take care when cleaning the sharp blades and do not reach directly into the cutting inserts. The GEFU spiralizers featured on this page are dishwasher-safe. Also follow the instructions on the relevant product page and in the user manual.

Allow all parts to dry completely before reassembling or storing the spiralizer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spiralizers

What Can You Make with a Spiralizer?

With a spiralizer, you can prepare zoodles, carrot spaghetti, cucumber spirals, spiral potatoes, vegetable ribbons, raw vegetable salads, soup garnishes and decorative toppings.

Which Vegetables Work Best?

Firm, straight vegetables such as zucchini, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, kohlrabi and beetroot work best. The vegetables must fit the opening of the respective model.

Which Vegetables Are Less Suitable?

Very soft, overripe, hollow or highly irregular vegetables may break during spiralizing. Very small or short pieces can also be difficult to hold safely.

Can I Spiralize Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes?

Yes. Use firm potatoes or sweet potatoes and make sure their diameter is suitable for the spiralizer. Larger vegetables can be trimmed to size before processing.

Why Do My Vegetable Spirals Break?

Common causes include vegetables that are too soft, uneven pressure, a vegetable positioned at an angle or an unsuitable vegetable size. Trim the ends straight and guide the vegetable through the blades as evenly as possible.

How Can I Keep Zoodles from Becoming Watery?

Use firm zucchini, salt the zoodles only after cooking and heat them briefly. If necessary, gently pat the cut zoodles dry before cooking.
